Comment: Thank you for the work so far, but unfortunately this subject does not meet Wikipedia's notability requirements. These are either WP:FILMMAKER or WP:BASIC and require reliable and in-depth sources. Excluding database entries, there is one, single sentence, reference in the Cineuropa review, and that isn't sufficient. So please have a look at the criteria, and add in the reliable independent sources to back up notability. IMDb is not regarded as a reliable source, so that should go, as per WP:IMDB. However it is OK to have it in an External link section. This is less problematic than the notability issue though. ChrysGalley (talk) 20:42, 6 December 2025 (UTC)

Gavin Scates is a South African production designer and art director based in Johannesburg. He runs the production design studio Brown Sugar Productions and has worked across feature films, documentaries, commercials and music videos in South Africa and abroad.[1]
Scates is best known for his production design on Laundry (Uhlanjululo) (2025), a Swiss–South African period drama set in apartheid-era Johannesburg that premiered in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).[2][3] His earlier work includes art direction on the Emmy-winning documentary The Serengeti Rules (2018), the short film Khethiwe and the Leopard (2017), and a number of award-winning commercials and music videos.[4][5]

[edit]Scates began his career in advertising, working on campaigns for South African and international brands.[1] He gained early recognition as art director on the 1st for Women Insurance television commercial Go Backwards (also known as So Backwards), produced by Black River F.C. and released in 2010.[6] The advert went on to win a Bronze Film Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, as well as awards at the Loeries, New York Festivals and The One Show.[6]
In 2018 he served as art director and stylist on the music video for South African artist Nakhane's single "Clairvoyant", directed by Tebza for The Bomb Shelter.[7] The video received a Silver
