PureLine Treatment Systems is a privately held chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) production and application company based out of Bensenville, Illinois. Their main industry foci include food safety, healthcare, life sciences, oil and gas, cooling towers, water treatment, and contract sterilization.

History

PureLine was initially formed as "ElectroSci" in Irvine, California in 1995 by a group of scientists and entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on electrochemical creation of chlorine dioxide. The company was renamed to PureLine in 1999 and spent the early 2000s expanding the range of applications, including pharmaceutical, sanitary, and oil/gas applications. PureLine entered the international market in 2007, but did not expand operations in MENA (Middle East and North Africa) until 2015. The headquarters were moved to Illinois in 2008, and all production remains US-based today.[1]

Technology

Chlorine dioxide is increasingly used across various industries due to its "eco-friendliness"[2]; its primary byproducts and chlorite and chlorate, which both break down to sodium chloride. ClO₂ also fails to form toxic or carcinogenic by-products like bromates, making it often preferred for the sake of human health.[3] PureLine implements this chemical reaction by crafting both aqueous[4] and gaseous[5] formulas for each client. The gaseous form allows for entire coverage of potentially infected or unsanitary spaces, which PureLine implements by bringing generators on-site.[6] The on-site generators are also used to implement larger scale production of aqueous solutions.

PureLine also sells direct-to-consumer chlorine dioxide applications, such as Pure100 disinfectant spray[7] and various concentrations of the PV product [8], a water-activated application of chlorine dioxide which the company likens to "'a bug bomb' for indoor spaces."

The company's technologies was found to be compliant with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 by an independent review for the activities of Design, Manufacturer, Installation, and Servicing of Chemical Generators and Manufacture of Chemicals.[9] This certification is recognized by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in which a company "needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements" and "aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements."[10]

Scientific Research

For the sake of brand credibility and encouraging scientific research on ClO₂, PureLine has 12 published case studies on their website. These case studies include the Leprino Foods study, in which dairy processing plant Lemoore West used PureLine's sterilization solutions to follow regulatory requirements of sanitation before expanding their facility [11], a hospital decontamination study where an unnamed hospital in the midwest reduced Legionella counts in the water system and minimized the risk of a Legionella outbreak [12], and a municipal water production study, in which surface bacterial growth was controlled while avoiding corrosion or cooling tower harm in a large California town. [13]. Other case studies published relate to safe discarding of meatpacking wastewater, food processing plant sterilization, and odor control.

In early 2025, PureLine announced a collaboration with research institution Penn State Pennsylvania State University to understand the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide in poultry virology. Penn State's Dr. Ruth Nissly (BS, PhD) and Dr. Mathias Martins (DVS, MS, PhD) are leading the study with the goal of understanding how low-level ClO₂ exposure in air duct filters can decontaminate existing virus-exposed poultry housing and prevent future outbreaks.[14]
