Teens in AI is a UK-based non-profit initiative that provides programmes introducing young people aged 12 to 18 to artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies.[1] It was founded in 2018 by social entrepreneur Elena Sinel and launched during the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).[2]
History
[edit]Teens in AI developed from Acorn Aspirations, a technology-focused youth organisation also established by Sinel.[3] The initiative was first presented at the 2018 AI for Good Summit, where Sinel outlined its aim of engaging young people in ethical and socially responsible uses of AI.[4]
The programme later expanded through regional partners in Europe and Africa. In Bulgaria, the Digital National Alliance reported on local implementations of Teens in AI activities and its mentorship model.[5] In South Africa, ITWeb covered a Girls in AI hackathon hosted at Redhill School in collaboration with the organisation.[6]
Programmes
[edit]Teens in AI supports workshops, bootcamps, and hackathons in which participants develop technology projects, often linked to global issues such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).[7]
Global hackathons
[edit]The organisation coordinates international hackathons, including the Girls in AI / International Women’s Day (IWD) Techathon. In 2023, The Express Tribune reported that two participants from Pakistan won a Teens in AI competition with an AI tool focused on menopause support.[8]
In 2025, ProPakistani reported that the IWD Global Techathon involved more than 2,000 participants across 41 countries.[9]
Regional activities
[edit]In Eastern Europe, Gazeta de Transilvania reported on a Romanian student organising a local technology competition connected to Teens in AI activities.[10]
Coverage and recognition
[edit]Teens in AI has been covered by several technology and business publications. City A.M. reported on the initiative’s work with young people exploring entrepreneurship and AI.[11] Sifted, a publication backed by the Financial Times, highlighted young founders whose early experiences included participation in Teens in AI programmes.[12]
Founder Elena Sinel has participated in UK technology forums such as the AIWF x WiSER conference and has been listed in Computer Weekly's “Most Influential Women in UK Tech”.[13]
