Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass (Chinese: 猫和老鼠：星盘奇缘) is a 2025 animated comedy film produced by China Film Co., Ltd., Warner Bros. Pictures, and Origin Animation. Written and directed by Zhang Gang, it is the first fully computer-animated feature-length film of the Tom and Jerry franchise.

The film premiered at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival on June 21, 2025, and was released in China on August 9.

Plot

During a chase in a museum, Tom and Jerry accidentally activate a magical compass that transports them to another world. On their journey home, they meet a group of new companions and become embroiled in a conflict against mysterious forces.^[1]

Production

In February 2025, the film was approved for production and filed by China Film Co., Ltd. and Warner Bros. Pictures, with Zhang Gang attached as the screenwriter.^[3] On May 31, it was selected to compete in the animation category of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival for the Golden Goblet.^[4] On June 17, director Zhang Gang revealed in a Weibo post that production had wrapped on the film after five years of work.^[5]

Release and reception

Tom & Jerry: Forbidden Compass premiered at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival on June 21, 2025. The film premiered in Chinese theaters on August 9, 2025, followed by a digital release on October 3, 2025 in China only.

Box office

At the Chinese box office, the film grossed $1.18 million on its opening day and about $1.97 million for its first weekend. In other territories, it grossed an additional $182,661 upon the film's release in Spain on October 24, 2025.^[6] So far, the film has grossed $3,533,076 worldwide.

Critical reception

The movie was generally met with a positive reception from audiences and critics in China, who praised its successful integration of classic American characters into a richly imagined Chinese fantasy setting. Critics lauded the decision to blend the franchise's traditional slapstick with elements of Chinese mythology and culture.
