Trademark issues

[edit]

I revised the trademark section to reflect The Open Group's current recommendations.

I've reworked the article a bit, trying to establish consistent standards for the use of the U-word here, as a compromise between The Open Group's trademark rights and the public's free speech rights:
  • The original program developed by Bell Labs: Unix.
  • OSes that resemble it: "Unix-like" (the "scare quotes" to reflect that it's not a formally correct term).
  • OSes complying with the Single UNIX Specification: UNIX.

GNU/kFreeBSD

[edit]

I'm adding GNU/kFreeBSD again. Anyone have your discussion and/or ping-pong game about GNU/Linux naming controversy if you like, but please don't remove GNU/kFreeBSD because of that. Thanks. 62.57.140.216

Mac OS X

[edit]

I edited the article since Mac OS X 10.5 is REAL Unix 10.0-10.4 is Unix-like talk (talk) 06:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC+8)

Does UNIX-like include UNIX?

[edit]

As is, the article is not clear about whether a real, branded UNIX would be classified as UNIX-like. In various WP articles, I see text like "UNIX and UNIX-like" as if they are two distinct categories. And I see UNIX-based used to cover both categories. But, if UNIX-like includes real UNIX, then there's no need for the term UNIX-based nor for the wordy "UNIX and UNIX-like" (since it would be kinda redundant).
