There is rarely a need to specify parameters manually. While a case is active, it draws its data from /data. When closing a case, it is substituted (via {{subst:casenav/closed}}, which automatically hard-codes the appropriate parameters based on the /data subpage.

The following two parameters are sometimes used on active cases and need to be specified manually:

• |behaviour=no will remove the "Behaviour on this page" statement which appears by default on case talk pages.
• |shell-case=yes will hide most of the casenav matter and is to be used if a case was created and closed by the same motion, such as in Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/COVID-19.
