Revered Alba Onofrio is an American queer Latinx theologian, activist, and educator. They serve as Executive Director and Spiritual Strategist of Soulforce, a U.S.-based nonprofit that works to end religious and political oppression of LGBTQIA+ people. Onofrio is known for their writings on Spiritual Violence, Christian Supremacy, and queer liberation theology, and is a co-founder of TeologĂa Sin VergĂŒenza, a bilingual digital media project focused on queer Latinx theological education.[1][2][3]

Education

[edit]

They earned a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School, where their studies centered on sexual ethics, embodiment, queer theology, and liberationist approaches to Christian scripture.[2][4] They were ordained in 2015.[5]

Career

[edit]

Soulforce

[edit]

Onofrio became involved with Soulforce in the early 2010s. The organization engages in nonviolent resistance and theological educational work to challenge the use of religion as justification for the exclusion or harm of LGBTQIA+ people. Onofrio has served as both Executive Director and Spiritual Strategist, roles that include movement organizing, teaching, and the development of theological and political education resources.[1][4][6]

Their work emphasizes identifying and resisting “spiritual violence”—forms of harm enabled or justified by religious ideology—and confronting Christian supremacy, which Onofrio defines as the use of Christian tradition and authority to maintain systems of social and political domination.[3]

TeologĂa Sin VergĂŒenza

[edit]

They are a co-founder of TeologĂa Sin VergĂŒenza. TeologĂa Sin VergĂŒenza (loosely translated as ‘Shameless Theology’) is a Spanish-language digital media project by and for queer Latinx people. It was developed in response to the dominance of the Religious Right in Spanish-language religious media in the United States and Latin America.[5][7]

El Centro Hispano

[edit]

Before their tenure at Soulforce, Onofrio worked with community-based organization, El Centro Hispano in North Carolina, focused on immigrant rights, direct services, and Latinx community empowerment.[2][8]

Sexual Liberation Collective

[edit]

Otherwise known as Revered Sex, Onofrio is also a co-founder of the Sexual Liberation Collective, an organization of sex educators, sex workers, and sexual health practitioners in the United States. The collective aims to provide support and inspiration to individuals working in the field of sexual education and advocacy.[8][2]

Public engagement

[edit]

Charlottesville

[edit]

In August 2017, Onofrio joined an interfaith group of clergy during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. They participated in counterprotests opposing white nationalist groups and provided pastoral and emotional care to demonstrators, including assisting those injured during the violence.[5][9]

Onofrio has also been featured in Spanish-language media discussing Christian supremacy and spiritual violence.[6]

Media presence

[edit]

Their public commentary has appeared in outlets such as OpenDemocracy, NBC News, QuĂ© Pasa Media, and Soulforce’s educational platforms.[3][7][9][10] They also host and contribute to the Soulforce Shameless Theology podcast and the spiritual-reflection series Love Letters from Rev Sex. Both projects center queer, feminist, and Latinx perspectives on spirituality and justice, and are produced in collaboration with Axis Mundi Media.[11]

Onofrio contributes to the podcast Soulforce: Queer Feminist Latinx Faith hosted on RedCircle.[7]

They also appear in the series Love Letters from Rev Sex, produced in collaboration with Axis Mundi Media.[12][13]
