Why do I have an IPv6 instead of !Pv4?

[edit]

I didn't even get a new modem, though I do have a new desktop. There was an outage last week which might mean they made changes that led to this. Anyway, when I'm signed out, the talk page has an IPv6 instead of IPv4.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 23:19, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You Internet Provider can change your IP address whenever they wish. I believe they will all be upgraded to IP6 eventually.--Shantavira|feed me 09:28, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Some ISPs can guarantee you a static address (against additional cost), but if you were used to having a stable IP address, your provider probably assigns sticky dynamic IP addresses.  --Lambiam 10:09, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
On my old computer, when IPv6 was brand spankin' new, I had disabled it and therefore all my Internet traffic used IPv4. I don't do that any more.
A computer can request an IPv4 and/or an IPv6 address from a router, and unless you are really tech-savvy, you won't have control over this. My computer has a v4 and a v6 address, but (this might be slightly simplified) each web page request (or maybe each browser window) uses one or the other. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 05:32, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
