Cube Creator 3D is a 2015 sandbox game developed by Edina-based Big John Games.[1] It was released for the Nintendo 3DS on April 23, 2015.[2] Gameplay lets the players explore a Minecraft-style game world. Cube Creator 3D is often cited as a Minecraft clone. Despite this, Cube Creator 3D received mostly positive reviews. In 2018, it got an update adding local multiplayer for two players and 3rd-person viewing.
Gameplay
[edit]Cube Creator is a 3D sandbox video game. It offers two game modes. In Survival mode the player is pitted in a randomly generated world. It incorporates build and combat mechanics. In combat, Cube Creator 3D pushes hostile mobs of bears and mummies. In Creative mode, it gives full access to all game items. Environments range from a desert to a snowy mountain. It supports C-Stick and Circle Pad Pro.[3] In 2018, it got an update adding local multiplayer for two players and 3rd-person viewing.[4]
Reception
[edit]
Cube Creator 3D received mostly positive reviews. While it was considered a "Minecraft clone",[5][6][7] critics praised the presence of a Minecraft-like experience to Nintendo,[8][7] though they dinged it as having less depth.[6][9] Mitch Vogel of NintendoLife said "While it certainly does not approach the level of depth of [Minecraft], Cube Creator 3D's simple presentation offers enough that it successfully manages to capture the adventurous spirit that made its inspiration such a runaway success."[6] Pierre Yves of Digitally Downloaded stated "While not offering anything overly new, it gets the interface right and makes use of the hardware well."[8] Bryan Rose of the Nintendo World Report praised the creative mode for allowing the player to build their own environment, but found the survival mode less fun.[9] Neal Ronaghan of IGN praised its low price.[7]
Sequels
[edit]Two sequels to Cube Creator 3D were made, entitled Cube Creator DX (2018)[10] and Cube Creator X (2019) for the Nintendo Switch.[11] Cube Creator X was released on Steam in 2019.[12]
