Adut Salva Kiir Mayardit is a South Sudanese public figure and philanthropist, currently serving as the Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programmes. She is the eldest daughter of Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, and Mary Ayen Mayardit. Adut is the founder of the Adut Salva Kiir (ASK) Foundation, which supports education, healthcare, and community development projects across South Sudan. She has previously engaged in public advocacy for youth education and has made charitable contributions, including donations of medical supplies, boreholes, and vehicles to various communities. Her appointment as Senior Presidential Envoy in 2025 followed the elevation of her predecessor, Benjamin Bol Mel, to the position of Vice President.

Early life and education

[edit]

Adut Salva Kiir Mayardit is the eldest child of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Lady Mary Ayen Mayardit, with six siblings. Her early education began at home, where her father taught her to read and tell time by drawing letters and clock hands in the sand. She attended schools in Ethiopia, including Itang, Panyido, Gambela, and Addis Ababa. At age ten, she moved to Kenya, where she initially did not speak English or Kiswahili, but learned several local and regional languages, including Nuer, Shilluk, Dinka, Anyuak and Amharic.[1]

Philanthropy and the ASK Foundation

[edit]

Adut Kiir founded the Adut Salva Kiir (ASK) Foundation, which provides communities with access to clean water, healthcare, and education. The foundation has supported schools, hospitals, and rural areas with initiatives including boreholes and donations of medical and educational supplies. Notable contributions include:

  • Boreholes donated to the Military Intelligence School and Bilpam Army General Headquarters in Juba (February 2025).[2]
  • Medical and educational supplies donated to the Ruweng Administrative Area, including antimalarial drugs and school materials.[3]
  • Three vehicles donated to the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to support public service delivery.[4]

Public engagement

[edit]

Adut Kiir has actively advocated for education, especially among youth. In November 2024, during a visit to Paneker Secondary School in Yirol West, she emphasized discipline and focus as keys to academic success and encouraged students to prioritize education.[5]

Government role

[edit]

In 2025, President Salva Kiir appointed Adut Kiir as Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programmes, a role previously held by Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel.[6][7][8]

Personal life

[edit]

Adut Kiir married an Ethiopian man, Nardes, in a church ceremony at Rejaf Cathedral in Juba in October 2011. The wedding was attended by government officials, members of the first family, and other dignitaries.[9]

Controversy

[edit]

Her appointment as Senior Presidential Envoy has drawn both criticism and support. Critics raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and concentration of political power within the first family.[10][11] Supporters highlighted her potential contribution to public service.[12]
