Lawrence Yu (Chinese: 于智博) is a Fortune 200 senior executive, Edison Award winner, entrepreneur, mountain climber, author of 5 books, Board member, who serves now as Head of Lenovo Group’s Middle East and Africa Regional Headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.[1]. Yu holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and is known for his leadership in Lenovo’s Saudi expansion and for becoming the first graduate in Harvard university's 389-year history to reach the summit of the world's highest peak, and also the first Chinese international student to summit Mount Everest.

Education

Yu left China in 1998 as a teenager to study in the United States. He attended Mitchell High School in Oregon, then enrolled at Michigan State University, majoring in Supply Chain Management which ranked #1 in the USA, where he was voted the “Best Student” by the class of 2023. He later earned his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Early career

Yu began his career at the global headquarters of Dell in Austin, Texas, in January 2004. During the 2008 global financial crisis, while many Harvard classmates struggled to find work, Yu received offers from Citigroup, Samsung Corporation, LG Electronics, Apple Inc and the National Basketball Association (NBA headquarters). After graduating from Harvard in 2009, Yu joined Citibank, and was posted to Brazil after completed the corporate’s training program, where he established South America’s first financial-services team dedicated to Chinese enterprises. He was named the bank’s New Employee of the Year in the entire Citigroup Latin America region.

Lenovo

Yu returned to China in 2010 as Executive Assistant to the Chairman and CEO of Lenovo Group[2], working on major strategic deals and the company’s global-expansion initiatives. In 2019 he rejoined Lenovo as General Manager of Lenovo Global Retail Solutions[3], leading five consecutive years of roughly 40 percent annual growth. He led the team to achieve the Edison Award in 2024[4], only the second time in Lenovo’s history the company earned that honor[5][6]

In 2024, Lenovo Group announced a strategic partnership with Alat, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).[7] Yu and his team led the completion of the US $2 billion strategic partnership cooperation project, and was recognized by the Chairman & CEO with the CEO Special Award. In 2025, Lenovo released an internal notice announcing Yu's appointment as the Head of the Middle East and Africa Regional Headquarters, based in Riyadh, where he oversees Lenovo’s regional headquarters and manufacturing milestones, driving the company’s footprint in alignment with Saudi Arabia’s industrial and digital ambitions.

Entrepreneurship

In 2015, Yu co-founded Toto Digital Technology, an enterprise-IT solutions company. He served as Chairman and CEO and guided the firm to win the 2017 China Finance Annual Conference “Best Fintech Innovation Award.”

Mountaineering

On 19 May 2018, Yu reached the summit of Mount Everest[8] (8 ,848 m), becoming the first Harvard University graduate in its 389-year history and the first Chinese international student to do so. Dr. Lawrence Bacow, the then president of Harvard University, together with his wife and the Vice President, received Yu and the Harvard South China Alumni Association founding team; the Harvard crest that reached the summit was returned to Boston and is displayed in the President’s Office.

Yu chronicled the expedition in his book No Shortcut to the Top, written as a personal journal that became one of the first Chinese-language works to document an Everest ascent.

Other activities

Yu is a Founding Director and Vice President of the Harvard University South China Alumni Association. He frequently delivers public lectures and motivational talks.

He appeared on Jiangsu Television’s If You Are the One (非诚勿扰) in 2013

and later led the Harvard team to win the 2017 Global Elite University Challenge edition of Who’s Still Standing (一站到底)
