Marcus Moziah Guerrier (c. 1997), known by his stage name Moziah, is an American singer-songwriter and music producer. He is a Haitian-American artist from New Jersey whose work blends genres of pop, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music in a vibrant, eclectic style.[1] Moziah has released one full-length album and several EPs since 2018, and his music has been featured in outlets like Bandcamp Daily and Forbes for its genre-blurring creativity.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Guerrier was born in Boston to Haitian immigrant parents and raised in Central New Jersey. He grew up in Hillsborough, NJ, where he was exposed to music from an early age – taking piano and guitar lessons, singing in church choirs, and performing in school musical theater productions.[2] This early immersion in music encouraged his passion for performing. For high school, he attended a performing arts program at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School, where he even played in a punk-ska band (an experience that taught him song-writing and improvisation).

Guerrier went on to study drama at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 2017.[2] During his time at NYU, he also picked up music production – famously receiving a copy of Logic Pro software from a roommate and beginning to create beats in his dorm roomtappedbrooklyn.com. In his final year of college, Guerrier balanced academics with artistic pursuits, even working as a teaching assistant in the drama department while recording music on the side.[2]

Music Career

[edit]

In early 2018, Guerrier, under the stage name Moziah, released his debut single “Can’t Stay in One Place,” a self-written pop/trap track that marked his official entry into music.[2] The song’s upbeat energy and relatable theme about the hustle of college life resonated with fellow students and garnered a few thousand streams on SoundCloud in its first weeks.[2] Moziah co-directed a music video for the single (with college friends as collaborators), reflecting his interest in blending music with visual storytelling.[2][3]

Later in 2018, Moziah independently released his debut album Dax Nextdoor. He wrote and co-produced the album, which he has described as a coming-of-age story set to music.[3]Dax Nextdoor was noted for its eclectic sound: in an editorial review, Bandcamp Daily praised the album as a "refreshing, uplifting" collection that "grabs handfuls of genre conventions and runs them through a kaleidoscope", resulting in a "colorful blur" of styles ranging from trap beats and ’90s-style indie pop guitar to dub reggae, synth-pop, and soul.[1] The album’s genre-blending approach helped establish Moziah’s reputation for musical versatility. It also produced the single "Skerred" (featuring artists Still Gosling and Aani), for which Moziah co-directed another music video.[3]

In 2019, Moziah followed up with an extended play (EP) titled Finessa Hudgens. This second project was self-produced and more personal in its content. Notably, Moziah embedded an interactive easter egg in the EP: a hidden three-digit code within Finessa Hudgens allowed dedicated listeners to unlock a prototype version of his next EP on his website.[4] This secret preview foreshadowed his upcoming release and demonstrated Moziah’s creative marketing and multi-media engagement with fans. Finessa Hudgens also featured collaborations with friends and fellow musicians, including actor Camrus Johnson and others, though Moziah remained the primary writer and producer.

In August 2020, Moziah released Zyeboi, the first of two conceptually linked EPs he had planned for that year.[4] Zyeboi is a three-track EP that leans into abrasive hip-hop and experimental electronic sounds. According to Flood Magazine, the songs on Zyeboi were dense and multifaceted, requiring multiple listens to appreciate all the layers. Moziah described Zyeboi as “a time capsule for a genuinely chaotic and frustrating time”floodmagazine.com. He explained that he wrote and produced the EP during a turbulent period in his life and amidst global unrest in 2020, channeling that chaos and frustration into the music. The EP was co-produced with his frequent collaborator Theodore Shier, and it features guest appearances from indie artists like Aani and Chuma Osse (IDKHIM). Zyeboi received positive notice for its energy and timely themes, and Moziah donated the project’s Bandcamp proceeds to a Black mental health organization.[4]

Later in 2020, Moziah released a companion EP titled Sweetboy. In contrast to the hard-edged tone of Zyeboi, the Sweetboy EP is a softer collection of love songs and R&B/pop influences.[3] The two EPs were conceived as contrasting “fraternal” projects – showing two sides of Moziah’s artistry. Sweetboy was issued in September 2020 alongside an innovative music video for one track that was filmed entirely within the video game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This unique video (for the song “Jerrymorganpark”) was created during the COVID-19 pandemic and was promoted through a partnership with the gaming brand HyperX, [5] illustrating Moziah’s tendency to blend music with visual and pop-culture elements. By the end of 2020, Moziah had effectively demonstrated both his musical range and his flair for cross-media storytelling through these twin EP releases.

In 2021, Moziah continued to drop new singles, such as "Do The Right Thing" (a collaborative track with singer-songwriter John Mark Nelson)[3]. He also performed as part of music showcases, including the Mondo.NYC festival’s 2021 artist lineup[3], further building his presence in the indie music scene. Beyond his recorded music, Guerrier has pursued directing and film projects in parallel. He frequently co-directs his own music videos and has expressed that filmmaking is another career goal of his.[6] In a 2019 interview with Forbes, Moziah discussed how his love of indie movies and his background in acting influence his music videos and artistic expression.[7] This multidisciplinary approach – merging music, visual art, and storytelling – has become a hallmark of Moziah’s identity as an artist.

As of 2025, Guerrier continues to be an active recording artist. He is recognized as part of a growing wave of independent pop and hip-hop musicians who build their following through diverse media and self-driven creativity. His work to date showcases a dynamic range, from upbeat pop anthems to experimental rap fusions, all underpinned by a narrative “storyteller” sensibility.[3]
