Performative Intervention (German: performative Intervention) is a theoretical concept in aesthetics and media philosophy coined by the Swiss-Colombian artist and philosopher Juan Mauricio Schmid Bello in his 2022 work, Eingang/Ausgang.
The concept is defined as the primary mechanism forgenerating truth and cultural capita (which Schmid Bello terms "Coining Knowledge") within a Social Space by actively intervening in its existing context.[1] It is the dominant social practice of the Transmodern era, enabling a politically representative existence within the digital network.
Mechanism and Function
[edit]Performative Intervention requires actionand performative presence in order to make an activity perceptible to other Autonomous Individuals.[2]
Generation of Truth (Coining Knowledge)
[edit]Schmid Bello argues that the concept of truth is not found in an objective, dualistic observation (subject/object) of an artwork, but is actively generated by the performer’s intervention within the existing social, political, or institutional context.
- Action:The act of intervening itself provides the context and generates the discourse.
- Result:This process of intervention and subsequent discourse is the method by which Coining Knowledge—the generation of cultural capital—occurs in the Transmedial Space.
Connection to Authorship
[edit]The presence of the author or performer is central to the concept. Schmid Bello asserts that the artist and their Authorship did not die (a notion prevalent in Postmodernity), but rather repositioned their potential.
- The interventionist process emphasizes that the technical means of communication in the digital network (the Nomadic Internet) constantly enable "display and performative presence," which directly links to an individual's "Artist-User-LifeStyle."[3]
Distinction from Intervention
[edit]Schmid Bello differentiates between a pure "Intervention" and a "Performative Intervention," though the boundary is fluid:
- Intervention: An action where the author's presence is primarily evident as an Index within the work (e.g., an anonymized physical installation like Offline Zeitkapsel).
- Performative Intervention: An action that requires the simultaneous physical or digital presence of the performer to activate the social context and drive the discourse (e.g., a collaborative, staged event like Coining Knowledge at the Bergen Assembly 2016).
In the context of the Inframedial paradigm, the Performative Intervention is the non-linear, multi-dimensional practice (associated with Nomadism) that ultimately transforms the individual from a passive, subjectified individual into a politically active Autonomous Individual by forcing them to consciously generate their own existence through action and presence.[4]
