The National Mathematics and Science College (often abbreviated to NatMatSci) is an independent co-educational sixth form college in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Founded in 2016, it specialises in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for students aged 15–20 and offers both boarding and day places to a predominantly international student body.[1][2] The college has become known for high A-level examination results and strong performance in academic competitions.[3][4]
History
[edit]The idea for a specialist STEM sixth form college was developed in the early 2010s by former St Paul’s School high master Dr Martin Stephen and Geoffrey Robinson, then Member of Parliament for Coventry North West, who felt that there was no equivalent of specialist performing arts schools for young scientists and mathematicians.[1] After several years of planning, The National Mathematics and Science College opened in September 2016 at Westwood Business Park on the edge of the University of Warwick campus.[5]
The college began with a small inaugural cohort and grew quickly: by 2018 there were 36 students on roll, rising to around 100 within a few years and approximately 150 by the mid‑2020s.[1][6] Dr Andy Kemp was appointed principal in 2020.[7]
In May 2018 the school received its first full inspection from Ofsted, which rated it "requires improvement" overall, although teaching and outcomes for pupils were judged "good".[8] In March 2019 the Department for Education issued a warning notice highlighting "serious regulatory failings" at the school.[9]
A follow-up Ofsted inspection in February 2020 reported significant improvement and rated the school "good" overall, with the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and sixth-form provision all judged "outstanding". All independent school standards and national minimum standards for boarding were met.[10] Subsequent inspections have been carried out by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, whose 2024 report highlighted a "culture of academic excellence" and a supportive, collaborative community.[2]
Academics
[edit]The National Mathematics and Science College offers a two‑year A‑level programme focused on STEM subjects, including mathematics, further mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science.[11] The college also runs a one‑year pre‑A‑level course for younger international students and a fast‑track one‑year A‑level programme, as well as a specialist preparation for medicine route.[11]
Teaching at the college emphasises inquiry‑based learning, problem‑solving and research skills, with small class sizes and a strong focus on extension work beyond the A‑level syllabus.[1] The ISI reported in 2024 that the curriculum "surpasses A‑level specifications, encouraging pupils to apply their knowledge to real‑world problems" and praised the school’s focus on STEM communication and research skills.[2] Many students enter national and international Olympiads in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology as an integral part of their academic programme.[4]
Because a high proportion of students are from overseas, the college provides specialist support in English as an additional language and in academic writing.[5]
Facilities
[edit]The college is located at 2 The Oaks, Westwood Way, in the Westwood Business Park area of Coventry, close to the University of Warwick campus.[10][5] Facilities include modern classrooms and specialist science laboratories designed for A‑level teaching, together with informal study areas where students frequently work collaboratively on problem‑solving tasks.[1][2]
NatMatSci is a boarding school and provides on‑site accommodation for most of its students. The boarding house offers single bedrooms, all of them en‑suite, along with communal lounges, kitchens and study spaces.[4][6] Students also have access to nearby sports and fitness facilities, including a gym and swimming pool, through local membership arrangements.[11]
The student body is highly international, with pupils drawn from more than 25 countries.[1][4] The school has no religious affiliation and enrols students from a wide range of cultural and faith backgrounds.[5]
Admissions
[edit]Admission to The National Mathematics and Science College is selective and aimed at students with strong prior attainment in relevant subjects. Applicants are normally expected to have high grades at GCSE or equivalent, particularly in mathematics and sciences.[12]
All candidates sit an entrance examination in mathematics and have an interview with senior staff; international applicants are usually required to take an English language assessment.[12] The college offers a limited number of scholarships and bursaries for particularly high‑achieving students.[12][13]
Day and boarding places are available. Fees for boarding pupils are significantly higher than for day students, reflecting the cost of accommodation and meals.[13]
Achievements
[edit]Academic results and destinations
[edit]The college has built a strong record of examination performance. In the A-level league table compiled by Britannia StudyLink, based on 2023 results, The National Mathematics and Science College was ranked third in the United Kingdom by percentage of A* and A grades (86.2%), behind only Cardiff Sixth Form College and Westminster School.[14] Other league tables and guides likewise place NatMatSci among the leading schools nationally for A-level results.[15][16]
The college has also been listed among the top co‑educational boarding schools in the UK in several independent guides, and is noted in some sources as one of a number of UK schools included in Fortune magazine’s list of the world’s top 250 boarding schools.[17][18]
