De'Wayne Jackson (born June 27, 1995), known professionally as De'Wayne, is an American musician, singer and songwriter from Spring, Texas. Emerging from the Houston rap music scene, he began listening to rock music and developed a genre-blending style after relocating to Los Angeles in 2015. After touring as a supporting act for Waterparks in late 2019 and early 2020, De'Wayne signed with Hopeless Records and released his debut album Stains (2021), which musically blended rock, hip-hop and pop music elements. His second album My Favorite Blue Jeans (2022) saw him transition towards a more melodic, straightforward rock sound, whilst this third album and first for Fearless Records, June (2025), pursued a funk rock direction.

Life and career

[edit]

1995–2016: Early life and initial career

[edit]

De'Wayne Jackson was born into a lower-middle class[1] Baptist family[2] on June 27, 1995.[3][4] He grew up alongside eight brothers and sisters[5] in Spring, Texas, spending time between his step-father, a pastor, and his birth father, whom he would work with on songs together on weekends.[6] From the ages of 12 to 17,[2] he began singing in church, which would inspire him to become a musician/performer.[7] (also talks about how church shaped him musically: https://www.mindedpodcast.com/post/dewayne-rock-music-journey) When he was 14, he received a microphone from his parents after his friends tried to start a group with him; he said that after this, "I kind of stopped focusing on everything else. I just wanted to do music."[5] He also cited seeing Kanye West and Jay-Z perform on the Watch the Throne Tour as "very inspiring" to him. (you/me could say it solidified his decision)[8] He said that whilst his parents were initially against music career, [instead wanting him to attend church do sports idk; a source from 2022], they later became more accepting/supportive.[2]

Jackson initially released music under the alias De'Wayne Wavy, a nickname given to him by a cousin, before deciding to use his real name.[2] After sharing CDs of his music around and asking promoters for slots,[9] Jackson performed his first live show at Warehouse Live in Houston on October 1, 2013, supporting fellow Houston rapper DeLorean.[10] In 2014, De'Wayne garnered attention in the Houston rap music scene after releasing Halftime, a collaborative extended play (EP) with Donnie Houston, and the single "Who Is He?".[11][12] He also performed shows opening for Pusha T, Dizzy Wright, and The Internet.[13] Jackson considered himself to be a "very wierd and alternative kid" around Houston due to his fashion style and avoidance of typical hip-hop themes.[14][15]

Seeking to further his music career and be around more like-minded people, De'Wayne moved from Spring to Los Angeles in 2015, when he was 19 years old,[2][16] using a connection with Sherwin-Williams.[5] He moved into a studio apartment in (central hollywood?) with a friend, who left after ten months. [source]. Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, De'Wayne was exposed to rock music after listening to Nirvana's Nevermind (1991), which was recommended to him by YouTube, followed by Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon (1973).[17][18] After listening to the songs "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" by David Bowie and "Wake Up" by Arcade Fire, he decided to become a rock artist and began studying the genre,[19] whose themes he said he related to more compared with those of hip-hop.[20]

[...] did not record any music for like an entire year after getting to LA until meeting with ppl i guess.(SOURCE WHERE) Four months after arriving in Los Angeles,[5] De'Wayne met his first manager, Naveed,[2] whom would help him get signed to Joel and Benji Madden's music company MDDN after he began working for them.[2] Whilst attempting to launch his music career, De'Wayne worked two jobs, as a paint delivery driver for Sherwin-Williams and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell.[3][21] He faced rejection from both audiences and record labels whom did not understand his genre-mixing style[7] (said it wasn't rock music)[15] and status as a black rock musician.[20][22]

2017–2023: Don't Be Afraid, Stains and My Favorite Blue Jeans

[edit]

In May 2017, De'Wayne released his second EP, Don't Be Afraid,[3] which he supported through tours with Jessie J,[23] Chase Atlantic, and Set It Off.[24] In 2018, he released a collaborative single with Chase Atlantic, "Adios".[25] In November 2019, De'Wayne dropped the "Jackson" from his stage name[26] and was the subject of a mini-documentary commissed by Dr. Martens, De'Wayne: Tough As You.[27] That same month, he joined Waterparks on their Fandom Tour across the United States as a last minute replacement for its original supporting act, Yung Pinch.[28] After performing at the Webster Hall in Manhattan as part of the tour, De'Wayne met with Waterparks' record label, Hopeless Records,[18] whom he would sign a two-album record deal with[7] in March 2020,[9] shortly after finishing a tour of Europe supporting Waterparks.[14][9] In a 2021 interview with Dork, De'Wayne credited Waterparks lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Awsten Knight with "putting me in a spotlight" through bringing him on tour when other friends and artists would not, stating that "Without him [...] I wouldn't have my [record] deal, and I wouldn't have an album."[29]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, De'Wayne completed work on his debut album, Stains,[30] which was largely inspired his personal experiences and struggles in the five years following his move to Los Angeles,[16] including gaining acceptance in the music industry.[31] The album's lead single, "National Anthem", was released earlier than originally scheduled in June 2020, in light of the George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests;[32] he cited the song as his first successful attempt to make alternative music in the style he wanted.[7][33] Knight features on "Perfume".[34] Stains was released in June 2021[31] to generally positive reviews,[35][36][37] and was listed as one of the 50 best albums of 2021 by Kerrang!.[38] Following its release, De'Wayne toured with Chase Atlantic and Willow.[39][40] Between April and July 2022, De'Wayne embarked on his debut headlining tour, De'Wayne's World,[41] and performed at the Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza festivals.[42]

After making his debut UK festival performance at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August,[43] De'Wayne released his second studio album, My Favorite Blue Jeans, in October 2022.[44] Intended to be a more cohesive, rock-focused album compared to Stains, the album was inspired by "a life-changing three-month period" in De'Wayne's life, during which time he entered a relationship with Willow, who co-wrote and produced three of its songs.[45] In an interview with Rock Sound, he said it was about "the will to love, the will to work, and the desire to live".[46] The album also features guest appearences from Poorstacy, Grandson, Good Charlotte, and I Don't Know How But They Found Me.[47] It received a positive review from NME, who said it "injects buckets of confidence and charisma into a stale radio-rock landscape."[48] In 2023, De'Wayne embarked on another headlining tour before supporting Grandson and K.Flay.[49]

2024–present: I Want You More than Anybody Wants You and June

[edit]

De'Wayne began working on new material shortly after the release of My Favorite Blue Jeans in late 2022,(kerrang/dork) and signed with Concord and Fearless Records shortly after finishing what he planned to be his third studio album. However, Fearless was only interested in releasing the songs that would make up his third EP I Want You More Than Anybody Wants You and told him to begin working on a new album.[50] De'Wayne said that whilst he was initially [...] by Fearless' rejection, he later believed the album would have (boxed him in creatively) and and took it as a sign to improve his songwriting/songs.[50] Around this time, he started listening to funk rock and artists including Lenny Kravitz, Marvin Gaye, Parliament-Funkadelic and Prince at the suggestion of a friend.[51] His songwriting also became influenced by his [newfound interest?????] in plant medicines such as ayahuasca and cactus.[52] something about ceremonies and herbal medicine what.[50][53]

De'Wayne announced his signing to Fearless in March 2024[54] and released his third EP, I Want You More Than Anybody Wants You, through the label in June of that year.[55] In July 2025, De'Wayne released his third album, June.[56] Produced primarily by ex-Flor bassist Dylan Bauld,[56] it is a concept album themed around the "divine feminine"[57] that tells the story two characters, Aim and June, who meet and fall in love after the former moves to Los Angeles.[53] To promote the album, De'Wayne toured North America with Red Leather in June 2025,[58] and performed at the Warped Tour in Long Beach, California in July.[59][60] He opened for Duckwrth on several dates of his American Freak Show Tour in September and October 2025,[61] and is scheduled to support MGK on select dates of his Lost Americana Tour in May and June 2026.[62]

Artistry and personal life

[edit]

De'Wayne's aristry has been described as genre-bending,[63] [...] [primarily???] primarily mixing the genres of ??? [...] whilst incorporating broad range of influences. [...] multiple genres, including [...] alternative rock, Americana, classic rock,[64] funk,[47] hip-hop, jazz,[64] pop-punk,[63] R&B,[21][47] rock 'n' roll,(SOURCES) and soul.[21][47] AllMusic categorized the sound of his early singles as "melodic rap".[47] [...] (mention Don't Be Afraid ....) Stains blended rock, hip-hop and pop music elements,[6][29] whilst My Favorite Blue Jeans followed a more melodic, guitar driven sound.[55] June followed a [...] 1980s-inspired direction.[65] DESCRIBE MORE (SOURCES) classic rock gets mentioned a lot [...] De'Wayne primarily categorized the album as funk rock, whilst highlighting jazz influences on two of its songs.[66]

De'Wayne grew up listening to hip-hop music by his father, and soul and R&B music from his mother,[67] whilst gospel music (church/family background yeahh). [...] He wrote his first song based on Lil' Flip (which his father introduced him to), something about writing the verse and changing the hook.[8] [...] His initial musical influences included J. Cole,[2] Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Tyler, the Creator, and Outkast;[21] he cited the lattermost's fifth album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003) as the first album he loved and a long-lasting influence.[8] His later musical influences ranged from Patti Smith, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed,[63] Arcade Fire,[52] The Killers,[59] James Brown,[22] Ramones, and TV on the Radio.[68] In 2017, he cited Radiohead as his biggest influence,[4] and the band's fourth album Kid A (2000) as his favourite album.[23] De'Wayne cited Green Day and The Cars as additional influences on My Favorite Blue Jeans.[69] The songs on I Want You More than Anyone Wants You drew inspiration from the Commodores, Oasis and the Human League;[55] AllMusic also viewed the EP as drawing from the 2000s-era garage rock revival alongside alternative rock and indie rock.[47] June drew inspiration by artists including Prince, Talking Heads,[51] Earth, Wind & Fire,[70] Lenny Kravitz, Sly and the Family Stone, and Brandon Flowers.[66]

De'Wayne believes in god. (WHAT god though. idiot. pls clarify here ok) he is religious/spiritual, crediits belief with getting through hardshiop (if i remember coreectly idk) He said that if he did not pursue a career in music, he would have become a dentist.[71]

I just like walking out the door feeling beautiful, to put it safely, so it definitely helps with making the music that I was making."[4]

from mtv news 2020:

MTV News: Your Instagram page is full of incredible looks. I mean, you've got these jackets, man. What are your style inspirations?

De'Wayne: I just love to feel beautiful. You know what I'm saying? I love to feel sexy. Sometimes the less clothes for me, the better. Just whatever makes me feel good. Like if I put it on and I feel hot, I'm just like, yep, this is it. That can be a dress sometimes, or that can be an army-looking jacket or some weird pants. I've been wearing these Juicy [Couture] pants lately, like some velour joints that I cannot take off because it makes me feel good. You gotta be radical with your dressing and be over the top, but anything that I see in an artist or inspiration. If they're free with it, that's what inspires me. So I try to choose clothes that make me feel as liberated as hell.

The song's combination of rock and hip-hop elements marked a departure from his prior output.[5]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imn8jR4Viu0 the De'Wayne tough as you video on YT

this mf's LORE: how tf he got no page??? like what???? mad interesting

need to clarify/add to disambiguation page to avoid confusion with this guy also called DeWayne Jackson

mention collabs with other artists along the way; there's enough sources

beware of potential conflicts of interest between De'Wayne and Alternative Press, as (since 2020) has been owned by Good Charlotte Madden bros (former) management? i forget but anyway

pigeons + planes 2017 also notes how dewayne has been making music for 7 years now; i.e. 2010 although he was 14 when he started, so either 2009 or 2010 (good enough)

COPYEDIT THIS FOR MUSICAL STYLE (derived from the lead, but the points it makes are good)

Emerging from the Houston rap music scene, De'Wayne moved to Los Angeles in 2015, where he began listening to rock music and developed a genre-blending style mixing rock, hip-hop and pop music. Following the release of his debut album Stains (2021), De'Wayne transitioned towards more of a melodic straightforward rock sound on his second and third albums My Favorite Blue Jeans (2022) and June (2025)

dont forget this line: "[...] led him to develop a genre-blending style mixing rock, hip-hop and pop music.[sources uhhh...]"

ya

[...] In an October 2022, with NME, he said he identified as a rock artist and [...] disavowed his genre-blending style.(nme october inteview 2022)

initially , but (with MFBJ onwards???) he

stains and MFBJ moreso pop punk?? any other sources too

Regarding his musical influences, De'Wayne said he [...] as he says in 2021 interview: "I had soul music and hip hop for the first 19 years of my life and then for four years I had rock music. I've studied it every day and now I have that blend, so you get an album like STAINS."[6] he says this thing is several interviews is it must be emphasized??

De'Wayne's deal with Hopeless expired shortly after the album's release.(upset oct 2022) Interviews

upset 2020:

"I remember at 18, I opened up for this guy, and the merch lady told me 'You could do something with this. I'm in LA, you should come', and that was it," he mentions. "Those years of people not caring helped me hone in on how I want to perform, how I wanted to get like a reaction out of people and get a reaction out of myself. With performances, you can give it the whole thing. You can dress up in glitter, in a dress, in a gown, in a suit and then go the fuck off. It's fucking art, it's tight!"

melodic magazine 2025

You said this upcoming record is probably your favorite body of work compared to your other releases. And I know you've said in the past that this is probably your most authentic album. What makes it more authentic?

I think in the past I just had no voice in the studio. I was using all of my influences, but I wasn't as good of a singer. I wasn't as good of a writer. I couldn't really hear parts that I wanted, and I think what makes it more authentic is that I'm talking about a subject that I care deeply about. And then the musicality of everything. It's funky and it's soulful and it's rocking. I really did a deep dive on the Black artists that were making rock 'n' roll. For so long all of my influences were Patti Smith, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed — who are still huge influences on me, but I now have combined them with Black artistry and with Black rock 'n' roll, which makes it more authentic in itself because that's just who I am as a human. But I really think it's the subject matter for me that makes it, because my friends who hear the record are like, "Oh, this is how you talk. Just love, love, love." If you talk to me on a day-to-day basis, I'm going to be talking about love, about how I'm trying to get closer to my heart. I found myself being able to use that on the album in a poetic way, and I would say that's the main reason why for sure.

SCRAPS

After embarking on a short headlining tour in May and June, he toured as support for in 2023??? https://shorefire.com/releases/entry/grandson-releases-career-defining-albumi-love-you

on the musical style things

Allmusic:

Kerrang, august 2025: https://www.kerrang.com/dewayne-interview-june-rock-music-spirituality

His 2017 debut EP, Don't Be Afraid, and his first two albums – 2021's Stains and 2022's My Favorite Blue Jeans – all showcased his ability to effortlessly and effectively mix punk and hip-hop [...] musical style of june:

classic rock review:

De'Wayne, from Houston, Texas, has it in abundance, but it's taken toil and nurturing an encyclopaedic knowledge of popular music – his eclectic output so far has taken in classic and alternative rock, soul, jazz, hip-hop and Americana on his journey to work out a formula for the perfect blend of the rock'n'roll he grew up with and the rock'n'roll of the future.

dork review:

Throughout the album, DE'WAYNE commits completely to this technicolour retro-pop vision – think the neon-soaked ambition of Conan Gray's recent 80s homage, but shot through with rock star grit.

melodic magazine review:

The record is a stellar genre-defying redefinition of his sound that draws inspiration from the likes of David Bowie, Lenny Kravitz, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye and more that still loudly and unashamedly screams “DE'WAYNE.” [...] With a complete redefinition of his sound and artistry, DE'WAYNE brings together elements of punk, R&B, alternative, funk and more for a magical genre-defying full-length record.

new noise magazine:

His third full-length LP, JUNE, articulately balances artistry with creative performance. The record balances rock, pop, and punk music effortlessly, [...] This power-pop record is difficult to define by genre, perhaps by design, much like the artist behind the work. The only comparable artist I could think of for DE'WAYNE is none other than Prince. Of course, the two share sonic and aesthetic similarities, but beyond that, the pair defy any gender-based expectations, especially surrounding sexual themes.

kerrang interview:

It's sexy, soulful and sleek, and an important reminder that, when you trace back the roots of rock music, it came from Black people, developing over the decades from jazz and blues and soul.
