Hi folks! I'm Zoë, but Mesocarp is perfectly fine too.
In my day-to-day life, I'm a free game developer working as part of a tiny studio with one other person. My work involves a mix of programming, game design, writing, and music composition. I also make other kinds of art aside from games, mainly standalone music and writing.

Mediation and dispute resolution

[edit]

I've learned over time that one of my favorite things to do here is help mediate and resolve disputes.

Although it only happens now and again, nothing compares for me to the feeling of seeing disputants start out furiously at each other's throats and end with everyone happy and being kind to each other. It's priceless and I treasure every memory I have of those experiences. I always hope for this if it seems like there's any possibilty of it.

It also breaks my heart to see someone on the ropes in a dispute who's working earnestly in good faith, being polite, and would have an excellent case if they only knew how to make it, especially when the other party is trying to wikilawyer them into oblivion or is just being meaninglessly intransigent without any serious points. Double if the other party is being rude and hostile in the process. When I was still wet-behind-the-ears as an editor, I had a couple experiences like that which were kind of emotionally traumatic, in the sense that they dealt heavy blows to my self-esteem and still haunt me years later. I know how lonely it can feel if nobody stands up for you in a situation like that and how much it can mean if someone does. So, when I encounter a situation like this, I try to do that, in a way which is firm, thorough, respectful towards everyone involved, and non-escalatory.

I've been giving third opinions for a few years and I recently decided to start taking on cases at DRN as well (as of June 2025). I love 3O because it's efficient, low-ceremony, and really effective. When both sides have strong arguments and have just reached a deadlock, I try to help them find a compromise within the bounds of policy that they both like. It's so cool when it works out.

In general, I feel like the best way to settle a content dispute is a laser-precise focus on the sources. So many problems are easily settled once everyone agrees on which sources are reliable, considers closely what they actually say, and works neutrally to proportionally summarize them. This process is almost automatic when truly done with a neutral mindset and generally leaves only points of small disagreement which are easily and cordially settled. So often people get caught up in bitter arguments based on subjective opinion and reach an impasse which they could overcome if they put aside all their preconceptions about the topic and just looked right at the sources and started there.
