Many small settlement articles are simply very short "dictionary defintions" or "database entries". Since Wikipedia is not a directory, in addition to meeting the notability criteria for settlements, an article for a settlement should describe more than the settlement's existence. Editors encountering one of these database entries - should strive to expand the article so that it meets the Settlement Threshold.
The Settlement Threshold
[edit]
After naming the settlement, the article should provide at least one sentence of relevant prose accompanied by one reliable source. The following are some examples of how this threshold may be met. These examples are not exhaustive and any encylopedic statement will suffice to meet the threshold.
- In the 2024 census, Villageham had a population of 1,234.[1]
- Hamletburg is located on the banks of the River Notable, across a bridge from Othertown.[2]
- Records of Named Place go back at least as far as the year 1900.[3]
- Settlement's name means The House On The Hill.[4]
- Soldiers were stationed on Populated Hill during the Important War of 2028.[5]
- In her book, Places, the travel writer A. Notable described Bunchofhouses as "Diminutive"[6]
- An episode of the TV show Walking Through Villages was filmed in Locationham.[7]
- It was one the 50 villages where The Event was held in 1900.[8]
When The Threshold is not met
[edit]
If this threshold cannot be met - then it may be appropriate to blank and redirect the article to a "parent" article e.g. a larger populated area that the settlement could be considered part of.
This is not in agreement with the notability criteria for settlements which state that populated, legally recognized places are typically presumed to be notable. To blank an article that technically does meet inclusion criteria is a decision that requires judgement on a case-by-case basis. This could therefore be understood as an application of Ignore All Rules and must be done with due care.
Examples of The Threshold not being met
[edit]- The hamlet of Hebron did not meet the threshold, so an editor redirected the page to Llanddyfnan, a village encompassing Hebron.
