Invitation to participate in research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of a group of Wikipedians to better understand their experiences! We are also looking to interview some survey respondents in more detail, and you will be eligible to receive a thank-you gift for the completion of an interview. The outcomes of this research will shape future work designed to improve on-wiki experiences.

We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this survey, which shouldn’t take more than 2-3 minutes. You may view its privacy statement here. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Kind regards, Sam Walton (talk) 16:35, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

Hannah Clover

Hi CR, I was advised to visit WP:DRV, but since you were the closer of the AfD discussion, could you agree with me and delete the current redirect at Hannah Clover, so that the incoming draft I was about to accept, Draft:Hannah Clover, can make its way through? Vanderwaalforces (talk) 13:30, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

@Vanderwaalforces: I deleted the redirect so you may technically proceed with the move. Let me know when this is done so I can merge in the old revisions.
Upon quick examination of the draft, the existence of new sources rules out re-redirection under WP:CSD#G4. I have not researched other sources to conclusively determine whether Hannah is notable now, however. Another editor is free to re-nominate at AfD if they believe she is not notable. Complex/Rational 19:46, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for tending to it. I have moved it now, just letting you know for the revmerge. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 21:44, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

Hi ComplexRational, I've run into an issue with that article. Unfortunately, with the deletionrestoration merge, some of the (previously-deleted) redirect revisions are shuffled in with the new draft revisions. In that light, in my opinion the current state of affairs is untenable: either the overlapping revisions should be redeleted (so effectively there would only be a partial restoration of the previous article/redirect), or all of the previously-G6ed page should be deleted (so only the article created in draftspace on 4 April and its corresponding revisions should stay). You may find WP:PV helpful.

Given that you did the merge, I'll leave it up to you; if you need help sorting through the revisions, I'm also happy to do any deletions or restorations as necessary. Thanks, Sdrqaz (talk) 00:23, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

@Sdrqaz: I had missed this – thanks for bringing it to my attention. I found the two problematic revisions and re-deleted them, so the page history is now continuous. Complex/Rational 01:58, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

superheavy talks

The TASCA '25 program looks interesting. :) Double sharp (talk) 14:07, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

(P.S. You might also like this paper theoretically studying 164Pb.) Double sharp (talk) 14:12, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
@Double sharp: Thanks for sharing! For many of the conference topics, there are already preprints or publications available, though page 10 of the TASCA program states that 257Sg was studied yet I can't find anything else online indicating that isotope was discovered. Any thoughts on that? Complex/Rational 20:47, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
Can't find anything either. Perhaps we have a paper to look forward to. :) Double sharp (talk) 21:19, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
It seems that the study regarding 164Pb is not entirely a new idea: I found this article "On the mass surface and the properties of nuclides close to hypothetical doubly magic lead-164" (2001). Table 2 and Table 3 list decay energies of nuclei close to 164Pb, for example the Qα-value of 164Pb is calculated as (5.04 ± 0.20) MeV or 1.29 MeV, while the Qα-value of 168Po is given as (14.03 ± 1.05) MeV or 16.35 MeV. (Yes I am very much more interested in 168Po. Well a Qα-value of 16.35 MeV may result in an alpha half-life as short as about 10-20 s ~ 10-19 s, but that's still longer than the half-life of 5He). :) 129.104.244.68 (talk) 03:03, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

Consensus was delete, but page wasn't deleted

Hi Complex, in November this Redirect discussion was decided as delete. But the page was redirected rather than deleted to here. I found it strange that it was still up as there was consensus on delete so I tagged it as CSD thinking it got forgotten. If I am missing something please ignore. Nayyn (talk) 23:07, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

@Nayyn: The project page was merely a redirect and did not have substantial page history; the redirect actually was deleted and not recreated. Whenever a redirect is sent to WP:RFD, only the status of the redirect is discussed, and the outcome of a discussion has no implications for the target page. Along the same line of reasoning, a redirect being deleted as an implausible typo would naturally not imply that the (correctly-spelt) target article should be deleted.
That said, I declined your speedy deletion request: WP:CSD#G4 requires substantially identical content in both a deleted and recreated page. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Complex/Rational 23:28, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

Recent AfD

Thank you for closing the AfD for Jared Safier. Now, upon review, I discovered that this page has been deleted several times for advertising and self-promotion, as evident in the deletion log. Would it be possible to put a lock on the page, to prevent it from being created yet again? BOTTO (TC) 00:55, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

@Botto: It was actually only created and deleted twice at that title, once in 2014 and once a few days ago, so creation protection is not necessary. Creation protection usually is only applied for pages with bad titles that are repeatedly created, and it does not prevent recreation at a different title. Complex/Rational 22:57, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Hello CR. In 2019, you voted to delete the unsourced one-paragraph article on the square root of 10. Does the recently created much-expanded version, Square root of 10, address the issues you cited in that discussion? Cheers! BD2412 T 16:07, 21 July 2025 (UTC)

@BD2412: On a quick read-through, sourcing is much improved compared to the version deleted in 2019, but I'm still not sure that the number is notable, a fact that cannot be overlooked despite the substantial expansion of the article. Much of the new article consists of properties that can be stated for any square root (e.g., continued fractions), and I agree with several points in the AfD that the use of 10 as an approximation of π is not enough for a standalone article and I can't find recently published sources that build a stronger case for notability. The bit about orders of magnitude is interesting, but in my opinion not enough to get it over the line, since it simply follows from the fact that 10 is the geometric mean of 1 and 10; one could make a similar argument for lots of roots or logarithms that otherwise aren't particularly significant. Complex/Rational 21:12, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
I am a bit surprised, but I think we will have to agree to disagree, then. Perhaps some mathematician will be inspired to publish something specifically on this number in the future. BD2412 T 21:57, 21 July 2025 (UTC)
Fair enough. I honestly feel notability is borderline and that the general concerns raised at the 2019 AfD are still valid. But then again, AfDs in 2022 for square root of 6 and square root of 7 both were closed with consensus to keep. Complex/Rational 19:25, 22 July 2025 (UTC)
Fancy pictures aside, I think the square root of 10 is more mathematically significant than either of those, or for that matter than something like 183 (number). BD2412 T 19:58, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – August 2025

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2025).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case Indian military history has been closed.
    • South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as All pages related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups.
    • The contentious topic designations for Sri Lanka (SL) and India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan (IPA) are folded into this new contentious topic.
    • The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.
  • The arbitration case Article titles and capitalisation 2 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 31 July.
  • The arbitration case Transgender healthcare and people has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 11 August.

Miscellaneous

  • Wikimania 2025 is happening in Nairobi, Kenya, and online from August 6 to August 9. This year marks 20 years of Wikimania. Interested users can join the online event. Registration for the virtual event is free and will remain open throughout Wikimania. You can register here now.

Hi ComplexRational, I saw that you closed this AFD https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/2025_Austin_Target_shooting. This looks like puppetry, does an investigation need to be opened? - Indefensible (talk) 02:50, 5 September 2025 (UTC)

@Indefensible: I saw your comment in the AfD and agree that something odd was happening there, especially with the SPAs. However, sockpuppetry is not the only possible explanation; it could be a simple case of canvassing in Discord or another chatroom, hence my closing note that AfD is not a straw poll. But it might be worth revisiting or digging deeper if it happens again (i.e., if the same group votes together again at other AfDs, or engages in another kind of disruptive behavior). It might be a WP:MEAT case among college students, e.g. a class at UT Austin. The 2 IP accounts both seem to be in Austin. However I am not an expert on how to handle these investigations. Will defer for now but keep an eye out. - Indefensible (talk) 03:29, 5 September 2025 (UTC)

Leading from behind

I don't understand why you deleted the disambiguation page I created, Leading from behind. It linked to two different pages on Wikipedia in which the phrase is used. Green Montanan (talk) 12:34, 19 September 2025 (UTC)

@Green Montanan: The purpose of a disambiguation page is to list out different pages with very similar titles, not every conceivable use of a phrase or partial title match, and in this case there were zero title matches or topics with more than a very brief mention in another article.
However, I suppose that WP:G14 may not be applicable if there is any pertinent page to link, so I will undelete and instead open a discussion at WP:AFD. Complex/Rational 15:44, 19 September 2025 (UTC)
I have converted the disambiguation page into a set index article, and it now includes a third entry.
I hope you will find the new set index article as notable, and agree to withdrawn the AfD nomination. Even if you don't think the page should be expanded into a set index article, hopefully just the new entry (a second book by an author with a Wikipedia article) will be enough for you to withdraw the nomination.
