I don't live on Cullen Ct, but I like the street sign

If you have any interest in editing Wikipedia by smartphone, I encourage you to read my essay, Smartphone editing. Thank you.

Welcome to my talk page I use the name Cullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" or "Add topic" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Hello and welcome to my talk page. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the comments that follow from July and August of 2009 readily visible, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome here on Wikipedia when I first started editing. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:38, 6 November 2011 (UTC

Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Debra and I made it to the summit of Mt. Whitney at 2:20 PM on Friday, September 11. Jim Heaphy (talk) 00:59, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Thovy Boni (04:45, 8 November 2025)

[edit]

how to make a article --Thovy Boni (talk) 04:45, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Thovy Boni. When writing a new article, the main role of a Wikipedia editor is to find reliable, independent published sources that devote significant, in depth coverage to the chosen topic, to create references to those sources, and to accurately and neutrally summarize what those sources say about the topic. Please read Your first article for greater detail. Successfully writing a new article is a major challenge for inexperienced editors. I recommend at least several weeks of improving existing articles combined with careful study of Wikipedia'spolicies and guidelines first. Cullen328 (talk) 05:59, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mclitsonfairbay (14:03, 16 November 2025)

[edit]
Note: Mclitsonfairbay's mentor Alyo is away.

Hi there. I have made an edit to a page, and have a typo in my remarks for the edit. How do I edit my own remarks to correct that typo? --Mclitsonfairbay (talk) 14:03, 16 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mclitsonfairbay. I assume that you are talking about edit summaries and in particular your misspelling of Port Huron. Edit summaries cannot be corrected and this typo is trivial and obvious. There is no reason to be concerned about it. Please read Help:Edit summary. Please note the advice there: Avoid long summaries. Edit summaries are not for explaining every detail. A truly serious error in an edit summary can only be corrected by making a dummy edit such as adding a space, and explaining the previous error in the new edit summary. ArbCom 2025 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:31, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hy Mayerson (18:16, 18 November 2025)

[edit]

References for this article on Melvin Goldfield. This draft was denied due to a lack of references. How do we improve the list of references if we do not have copies of independent work available to cite? --Hy Mayerson (talk) 18:16, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Hy Mayerson. Your draft calls this person a significant figure. Who says so? References to significant, in depth coverage of this person in fully independent, reliable sources are required to write an acceptable Wikipedia biography. If you cannot find such sources, you should abandon the draft. Cullen328 (talk) 20:59, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand what you are saying. Melvin's work was shown internationally, but I'm not finding anything that can verify that fact since he passed in 2000. Not much on-line info was available before then. Some of his work was purchased by the Chester County Court House and displayed in the 1990's and I am working on finding proof of that. Otherwise we may be at a dead end unless you can suggest a different way to get the page published, possibly by entering in a different category. Hy Mayerson (talk) 19:40, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) @Hy Mayerson: if you are aware of such sources but cannot access them, whether they’re paywalled or simply not on the Web, you might try asking at WP:RX.—Odysseus1479 21:22, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Okmate (14:17, 20 November 2025)

[edit]
Note: Okmate's mentor Goldsztajn is away.

How can I get my draft looked at sooner? I've been working on an article for the Coronation of Charles II of England, and i've felt it needs an entire article to itself because of how much stuff happened. Not to menti1on how it was the first coronation after the civil war. --Okmate (talk) 14:17, 20 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Okmate. Your draft has been declined because you have not provided sufficient references to reliable sources. The Pepys reference is a primary source that is, of course, over 350 years old. Far newer secondary sources are preferred. I would look to in-depth academic biographies of Charles II published in the late 20th century or 21st century. They may well analyze what Pepys wrote. Question from Majortom227 on Tomás Méndez (02:19, 21 November 2025)

[edit]

Hey Cullen328, brand new to this. I wanted to double check that the subjective promotion issue in the biography section of this page is "and started building his career as a songwriter" before I made any edits. (And if not that, then what it is that I'm blind to.) Thank you kindly! --Majortom227 (talk) 02:19, 21 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Majortom227. The obvous problem with that section is that it is competely unreferenced and therefore fails two core content policies, Verifiability and No original research. I would have used a different template. Cullen328 (talk) 03:43, 21 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to have a history with this one. He seems to be back to doing his antics again. In any case I figure you may be involved in this case so just asking what to proceed with now. ~2025-34607-36 (talk) 19:00, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just worth noting, this IP has been leaving threats on The Banner’s talk page, refusing to discuss their disputed content with TB, and left a rather snotty message on a completely unrelated user’s talk page thread… I know it was my report that resulted in TB being banned last time round, but this time I feel like this IP is causing issues. Hello, Danners430. I have no objection to a temporary account alerting me to any type of problem needing adminstrator attention. Discussing things first with individual administrators before going to high visibility noticeboards is a good thing and is to be encouraged. The problem I have with this specific report is the complete lack of recent evidence. The word "antics" is a personal attack without evidence. Cullen328 (talk) 19:17, 22 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections - Call for Candidates

[edit]

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/December 2025/Candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • November 25 – December 1 - Call for candidates
  • December 4–8 - Discussion phase
  • December 9–15 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familiar with the community's expectations of administrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for admin elections candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a seven day call for candidates phase, a two day pause, a five day discussion phase, and a seven day private vote using SecurePoll. Discussion and questions are only allowed on the candidate pages during the discussion phase.
  • The outcome of this process is identical to making a request for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA versus administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. Later, a user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

You're receiving this message because you signed up for the mailing list. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the list.

Hello, General Ization. I would prefer that my comment not be hatted because it directly addresses arguments that that the nominator has put forward. Cullen328 (talk) 18:50, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yes, but it is those arguments and all that follow I propose to {{collapse}} (not {{hat}}, as I thought about it a bit more). It would be strange if your comments remained uncollapsed while the content you were responding to is. The nominator has expressed agreement. General Ization Talk 18:58, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But I see also that your comments are responsive to the nominator's opening comments, so will leave them alone unless you choose yourself to add them to the collapsed section (to be done later). General Ization Talk 19:55, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
General Ization, I disagree with the collapsing of my comment that has taken place. I do not see it as useful in any way. But I will leave it alone to avoid further inflaming the situation. Cullen328 (talk) 20:20, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I did not collapse anything. Hadn't gotten to it (been busy in RL), but as I mentioned above I planned not to collapse your comment. General Ization Talk 21:51, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Integral Wizard (12:03, 26 November 2025)

[edit]

Hello. How can I create an article? I only see suggested edits but I'm not interested in editing other docs, just creating a new one that should be in the wikipedia. --Integral Wizard (talk) 12:03, 26 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Integral Wizard. Your account is too new and too inexperienced to create new articles. I recommend that you spend several weeks productively improving existing articles. Writing an acceptable new article is exceptionally difficult for someone unfamiliar with Wikipedia's Policies and guidelines and social norms. Start by studying Your first article and the links you will find there, and consider using the Articles for creation process. Cullen328 (talk) 18:05, 26 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure writing an article with Wikipedia style is actually very easy. Trivial to edit using different tools. I want to add important information to public wikipedia, not edit other articles. Integral Wizard (talk) 18:07, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Integral Wizard, style is far from the only issue that most new editors have difficulty with. In order to write an acceptable new article, it is necessary to understand Wikipedia's core content policies and most important guidelines. At this point, you lack the necessary experience to write a new article. That requires at least four days of editing and at least ten productively edits. What is the topic of the article you want to write and why do you believe that the topic is notable and therefore eligible for an encyclopedia article? How much have you studied the links that I provided you? Cullen328 (talk) 19:10, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to describe the next Internet protocol (a cloud protocol) which I have studied for more than 4 years now and it is in the middle of a massive shift in software space. I also have 15 years of experience in software engineering, so I know what I'm talking about. People deserve to know. Spending 4 days editing articles, for what? For using ChatGPT to style my post accordingly? Integral Wizard (talk) 20:21, 28 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Integral Wizard, on Wikipedia, people deserve to know only about notable topics and I have asked you to explain why your topic is notable as Wikipedia defines that term. You cannot create a new article directly with your current level of experience. You can begin writing a draft in your sandbox or you can use the Articles for Creation process. Your work must comply with the relevant policies and guidelines. This is mandatory and not negotiable. Cullen328 (talk) 01:07, 29 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would be happy to explain why it is important. And could try to write it all out in sandbox.
In short, software world is simultaneously going through two major shifts - crypto and AI. This defines the entire software space going forward. Massive change in a few decades. But what everybody is missing is that crypto is not just about finance/ tokenization. Beyond, crypto can be used to write any software on-chain. This is beyond 99.9% of crypto. Nobody in crypto knows or cares about this. While all in traditional/ web2 world presume crypto is just about finance.
And so the vast majority of software (including crypto) ignore, that we are transitioning to a new Internet infrastructure. The cloud providers are coded as an internet cloud protocol. And the software is written by AI. This is massive, beyond the scale of dot-com. ~2025-37096-27 (talk) 12:57, 30 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I assume that you are Integral Wizard editing logged out. Please log in to edit. Every word that you wrote may well be true, but the way that you are framing it sounds like this is your own original insight. Wikipedia has a core content policy, No original research that does not permit that type of content. You use the word "important" and maybe it is. Wikipedia editors use the word notable instead, which is defined differently. The role of a Wikipedia editor is to summarize work by others that has been previously published elsewhere in reliable sources. If you have new insights into the future of the software world in the era of crypto and AI, you should write a paper and submit it to a peer reviewed academic journal covering information technology. Only if and when those new insights have already been published elsewhere, might a Wikipedia article about this topic be acceptable. Cullen328 (talk) 17:41, 1 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
ICP is developed by Dfinity Foundation, which is the largest crypto and distributed software research center in the world. I'm not making this up, just putting it together.
Dfinity.org: 1600+ employee publications, 100,000+ citations and 250+ employee patents Integral Wizard (talk) 21:46, 1 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Integral Wizard, then go ahead and write your draft, citing and summarizing coverage of Dfinity Foundation in reliable sources that are fully independent of Dfinity Foundation. When you are confident that your draft fully complies with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, then submit it to Articles for Creation. Cullen328 (talk) 22:03, 1 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Haongonoka. That reference uses a shortened footnote template. The documentation is at Template:Sfn. Question from The Will Guy (15:38, 3 December 2025)

[edit]

Hello dear mentor! I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to ask whether it’s allowed to fully translate an article from a government institution, for example, a school, or if I should request permission beforehand. --The Will Guy (talk) 15:38, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, The Will Guy. It is not usually useful to post the full English text of a government document on Wikipedia, and in general the same would apply to a translation of a government document. There are exceptions though. For example, we include the full text of the Gettysburg Address because it is brief and of enormous historic and literary importance. The copyright status of your document needs to be taken into consideration, which varies. For example, documents created by employees of the US federal government are in the public domain, but documents from many other government agencies are restricted by copyright. If you give me more detailed information about the source of the document, what it is about, and why you think that a translation belongs on Wikipedia, I may be able to give you better advice. Thank you for your answer!
For example, take Gymnasium Kirchenfeld. It’s the school I attend, and unfortunately there is only a German article at the moment. I would like to help by creating or improving an English version. The Will Guy (talk) 21:57, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Imp0ss1blyPrepared (22:09, 3 December 2025)

[edit]

Hello. I am a recent account addition. I mostly did so to actually connect my financial contributions to myself, who is a frequent consumer of Wikipedia information and felt it deserved more help due to increased reactionary attacks towards free information.

I have never edited before due to my feeling of ever-limited experience in any field, at least any experience or knowledge worth editing a page for.

In your opinion, what is the best way to judge whether someone's information, with proper sourcing of course, is worthy of submission to begin with? Whether any information had significant enough veracity or import?

Thanks, a common user with a new account. --Imp0ss1blyPrepared (talk) 22:09, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Imp0ss1blyPrepared. First of all, there is no connection between your financial donations to the Wikimedia Foundation and your contributions as a Wikipedia editor. They are completely separate. The question about which information belongs in an encyclopedia and which doesn't is an interesting one, and sometimes there is no easy answer. Wikipedia has many policies and guidelines that can help making that determination. The three interrelated core content policies are Verifiability, the Neutral point of view and No original research. Notability is a very important guideline that is a tool for determining which topics are eligible for a freestanding article. What Wikipedia is not is a policy that describes what is inappropriate for inclusion. In particular, Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. It is a reference work, specifically an encyclopedia. I hope that this helps. Cullen328 (talk) 02:51, 4 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections - Discussion Phase

[edit]

The discussion phase of the December 2025 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • Dec 4–8 - Discussion phase (we are here)
  • Dec 9–15 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/December 2025/Discussion phase.

On December 9, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's totals during the election. You must be extended confirmed to vote.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which typically lasts between a couple days and a week. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate who has not been recalled must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. A candidate that has been recalled must have at least 55.0% support. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Question from Pranav Sahaj (13:43, 5 December 2025)

[edit]

Is a screenshot from Google Earth copyright free, i.e.. can I upload them into Wikipedia articles? --Pranav Sahaj (talk) 13:43, 5 ecember 2025 (UTC)

Hello, Pranav Sahaj. Although Google does make Google Earth images easy to share, the terms of their license are more restrictive than Wikipedia requires. For example, they do not permit promotional re-use for commercial purposes on posters, t-shirts, coffee mugs and the like. Freely licensed images on Wikipedia can be used commercially. So, Google Earth images cannot be used on Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 06:22, 6 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
