On this WikiProject Stub sorting subpage, you can propose new stub types (please read the procedures beforehand!), as well as the reorganization and subdivision of existing stub types. You can also discuss anything else related to stubs on the talk page.

Proposing new stub types – procedure

Important: If you wish to propose the creation of a stub article you've come to the wrong place. If you don't have a username yourself, please go to WP:AFC for proposing a new article. If you already have a username, you can create the article yourself. If you don't know how, add {{Helpme}} to your user talk page to request help from other editors. This page only deals with stub templates and categories; we cannot help you with creating articles.

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow these procedures:
  1. Check the List of stub types or under Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please bear in mind that a stub category isn't about the importance or notability of the topic!
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that template. You may use this tool to scan through categories; tagged stubs are always in Category:All stub articles and transclude {{asbox}}. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently marked with {{stub}};
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. If you use any category scan (from the tool mentioned above or from any other), please link to it so that other users can confirm that the results are still accurate.
  5. Others may do the same, if they so desire.
  6. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and/or template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached.
  7. If you wish to propose a stub type which does not currently have 60 articles that could use it, you may propose an upmerged template in a similar way. An upmerged template would feed into currently existing stub categories until such time that there are enough stubs for a separate stub category. At that point a category for it may be separately proposed. Some times, it may be difficult to be sure how many stubs would get a tag - in which case you can also start with an upmerged stub tag until you're sure there are enough.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which has already been created and is being discussed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion is the correct page for proposals to delete a stub type.

^ Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if it is the primary stub type of a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

"Speedy creation"

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope.

I think we need to ignore my proposal from earlier this month regarding this category, I forgot that metro stations go in the rapid transit categories not the train station categories. Looking through some of the larger grandchild categories of Category:United States election stubs, I see that: Category:Vermont election stubs has 152 pages, of which 91 are about gubernatorial elections (using my browser's find function); Category:Connecticut election stubs has 173 pages, of which 88 are about gubernatorial elections (using my browser's find function); and Category:Texas election stubs has 165 pages, of which 97 are about Texas House of Representatives districts (using my browser's find function).

Looking beyond just the United States: there are 203 pages that would fit into a hypothetical Category:London elections stubs, of which 104 pages would fit into a hypothetical Category:London Borough council election stubs; 125 out of 166 pages in Category:Japanese election stubs are gubernatorial elections (using my browser's find function); at least[nb 1] 103 out of 172 pages in Category:Malaysian election stubs are state constituency pages (using my browser's find function); there are 185 pages that would fit into a hypothetical Category:European Parliament election stubs; there are 88 pages that would fit into a hypothetical Category:Nigerian election stubs; there are 96 pages that would fit into a hypothetical East Midlands election stubs; there are 295 pages that would fit into a hypothetical East of England election stubs; there are 134 pages that would fit into a hypothetical North West English election stubs; there are 178 pages that would fit into a hypothetical South East England election stubs; there are 121 pages that would fit into a hypothetical South West England election stubs; there are 121 pages that would fit into a hypothetical West Midlands (region) election stubs; there are 78 pages that would fit into a hypothetical Yorkshire and the Humber election stubs; and there are 715 pages that would fit into a hypothetical Category:England by-election stubs, of which 78 pages would fit into a hypothetical Category:East of England by-election stubs, 106 pages would fit into a hypothetical Category:North West England by-election stubs, 129 pages would fit into a hypothetical Category:South East England by-election stubs, 101 pages would fit into a hypothetical Category:South West England by-election stubs, and 81 pages would fit into a hypothetical Category:West Midlands (region) by-election stubs.

Comment I'm guessing that there is probably a bot that would make the process of updating stub templates easier, but I don't know what its name is. I thought of looking through the edit history of pages that have been put into stub categories recently approved here, but looking at a page transcluding the recently-created Template:1930s-UK-drama-film-stub yielded a non-bot edit, looking at a page transcluding the recently-created Template:1950s-musical-film-stub yielded a non-bot edit, and looking at a page transcluding the recently-created Template:Pennsylvania-PARepresentative-Democratic-stub yielded a non-bot edit, so maybe there isn't a bot for this, but this still feels like something that a bot would have been created for, and the existence of PetScan indicates that using a bot would be possible. Could someone please tell me if there is a bot for this? I would obviously prefer to not edit stub templates on over 1,500 pages manually if I don't have to. Care to differ or discuss with me? I'm not keen on having Yorkshire railway station stubs as a single sub-group because they make up the vast bulk of Yorkshire and the Humber railway station stubs: there are comparatively few that aren't in Yorkshire. The ones that would be left behind would comprise those in North Lincolnshire (20 stub articles out of 46) together with those in North East Lincolnshire (2 stub articles out of 36), which even taken together don't have many stations. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:30, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Although I support these, just a warning, I think the Indian counts might be inflated as there are a number of categories that fall onto one or both of these that arent exclusive, for example, Category:Rivers of the Western Ghats falls into both of these categories and a number of others, Category:Tributaries of the Narmada River is in the MAharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Also there may be some undercounts as articles have {{Maharashtra-geo-stub}} or one of its subcats. I suggest the old mantra, templates first, categories of they prove to be over 60, just be careful. 15th-century English MP stubs

We have split most of the other English MP by century categories by parliament now, only this and the 18th century(7 years) remain. This one is getting large so I propose following the precedent and splitting by parliament. There are a large number of these, nearly enough to have a stub category for the templates, but most categories contain fewer than 60 articles so yes there will be a large overlap but hopefully not too bad. I have proposed all the categories and templates, just incase someone wants to make the missing articles in the mean time.

Australia politician stubs

One that keeps creeping up. We have already split out the mayors and diplomats, we have then split out by party and then split one of those parties by where they sit (each state/senate/representative). I can find no party that would pass the 60 mark however I propose we split by state parliment that people sat in, a number of these would already have sub categories as we have split the Labor party politicians. ACT is likely to be too small for a category, the others should easily pass 60

This one is closing in on 700 articles, We have a choice of by Comarca or by municipality. It doesn't look like any individual municipality will get over 60 so I propose it would be more sensible to split by Comarca. I did think of using upmerged by munucipality templates as this information is more often included in articles but at 79, it felt like doing a US state split again and I'm not ready for that:

Cologne S-Bahn stubs

Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn stubs should be split to match the split of the parent article (Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn) to Cologne S-Bahn.

In the alternative, station articles served by the Cologne S-Bahn and not the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn could be upmerged into North Rhine-Westphalia railway station stubs. Mackensen (talk) 01:39, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It doesnt look like there are enough articles for a category, I was going tosuggust we create the template and use that to upmerge to both categories, but I suppose there is no guarentee that all the articles to do with Cologne S-Bahn are stations (different lines, the trains people involved etc). Yes, Cologne S-Bahn stubs would only be a subset of North Rhine-Westphalia railway station stubs; I'm fairly certain it doesn't cross into another state. I'll just re-categorize as appropriate. Mackensen (talk) 20:05, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
